Big Time

By Kevin

Our mission to make all the important characters from Batman Beyond (and then some) plows onward with this character form season three. Tim and I both agree that Big Time is far from our favorite villain on the show. But he had to be made. And actually I think this project was something of a bonding experience for me. The episodes weren’t nearly as bad as I remembered. The ingredients here are a pair of Mattel TNBA Batman legs, a Bruce Wayne torso, and a JLU Bizarro head. All of these pieces were of course heavily modified. The only significance to the torso piece was that the arms articulate, so don’t go searching for a Bruce Wayne torso any old thing with arm joints should work (just prepare yourself for a lot of from scratch sculpting.) I used my KG Beast method of slicing the torso vertically down the middle with a hack saw, filling it with foil and sculpey, and completely rebuilding it to be massive. The arms were also heavily modified. Bruce’s arms are pretty much all gone. The big right arm is an original sculpt. The left one I’m not sure. I think the hand came from Martian Manhunter, but this is what happens when you make a bunch of customs all at once then write the recipes much later. Bizarro’s head was also heavily reworked, but the face was pretty close already (saving me from having to do a head from scratch!) It was mostly necessary to enlarge it, then give him a brow and some hair. I attacked the head at the appropriate angle to the torso. Big Time had two outfits in his two appearances. A torn clothes Hulk sort of look, and a combat boots, holster, and tank top look. Leave to me to overlook this and instinctually start sculpting him in his more complex first form. It wasn’t until after I’d sculpted the torso that I realized the tank top look would have been much easier. Oh well, I guess he looks more impressive this way. His torn clothes were made from vinyl. Big Time’s legs were an after thought because of this costume confusion. I realized that in his first form he actually had bare feet, so I had to go back and sculpt those. While doing this I also decided that his legs weren’t nearly bulky enough, so I reworked those and added more detail to the deformities in his skin. Kind of a lot of work for a character we don’t like much. Though he looks pretty good I’d say, and that makes it all worth while.
